Critics Consensus

It doesn't lack ambition, and it boasts undeniably thrilling source material, but The Red Baron is brought down by its overly sentimental script and a number of historical inaccuracies.

The Red Baron | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Kevin Thomas Los Angeles Times If the film is intelligent and thoughtful, it is unfortunately lacking in energy and passion; it is more a somber, highly familiar reflection on warfare and its toll than an action movie. Retired A Very good movie and based on a true story. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/27/22 Full Review Audience Member Compared to the 1971 one, this is worse. You really believe Prussian army allowes clothing personalisation during a war? Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member I've seen much, much worse. If you like WWI, The Imperial Reich, snazzy German uniforms, vintage airplanes, dogfights, Pour Le Merite, etc., and a dashing aristocratic war hero, it's worth a watch. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member "The Red Baron" Love, Hate, and Everything In BetweenA movie review of "The Red Baron" by Molly McCarver"The Red Baron" is a movie that begins in 1916, at the beginning of WWI, about a German fighter pilot, Manfred Richthofen, who becomes WWI's greatest and most successful fighter pilot. Over the course of the movie and war, Richthofen grows in ranks and falls in love with a girl that changes his perspective on the war and his job. "The Red Baron" showed what goes on behind the fighting in war, with little false content. In "The Red Baron" Richthofen is a confident, maybe even brilliantly confident "I only attack if I can win", young fighter pilot who rises in command several times throughout the movie. He commands the 11th fighter track and is on first line when most of the action happens. There are many ups and downs he experiences while fighting and when at the base, like falling in love with Kï¿ 1/2te Otersdorf, a young nurse who does not like him in the beginning but falls in love with him in the end, or losing his friend in battle. This is also when he paints his plane red despite what his superiors say and becomes the " Notorious Red Baron". The Baron takes planes down but does not shoot the people in them on purpose. He then goes to Berlin and gets another promotion. He then became injured and really started to talk to Kï¿ 1/2te. The Baron's flight was attacked at night when they do not fly at night; he decided, with a hurt head, to fight back to the British that attacked him. After this he visits the trenches and is asked to command the entire airforce and give up flying to do it. He refuses saying that he would surrender if that is the position he was given, because he said he can fly with his people and friends while they risk their lives, but he will not let them die alone for him. Two weeks after he got back in a plane he died in Allied territory."The Red Baron" was an intriguing and entertaining movie. The movie showed what happens behind the fighting and blood, it showed that people think they are doing what is right be killing but they realize that there is dark and there is light to war. The more pain Baron goes through the more he sees that war is not what he thought it was, and that the hardships take over the positive but you have to keep fighting through it."The Red Baron" is movie that always kept the interest of the audience, whether it was through fighting or the heartfelt moments that gave a vulnerable side to the war. This movie is bringing out a new side to war and what people get from war based movies. It is typical that most war based movies are made to scare people into not having another war like it, but this one showed a story of love, hate, and everything in between that happens when you are pit against family. While overall "The Red Baron" was a great movie, there were a few historical problems with it. One example, was not necessarily wrong but deceiving, and that was that there was one Jewish pilot but in real life there were many. Others included Richthofen's attitude towards other pilots, which in the movie said that he didn't shoot people he shot planes but in history he aimed for their heads in the beginning of the war. Another important thing was what the role of Kï¿ 1/2te was and if she had as big an influence on the Baron in history as she did in the movie (Gregson). The last extremely important topic was how he felt becoming a Cadet. In the movie at the age of 10 he was anxious to be a pilot but in real life he did not want to until he got in to a plane (Tyson).Despite a few kinks, "The Red Baron" was an interesting and rivoting movie. The Baron learned about hate, and love and grew so much in the little time he was alive and fighting in the war. This movie would be fit for people likely over thirteen but any age after that, that has an intrest in WWI or any growth of a war hero story.Rating:3.5 out of 5Citations:Tyson, Peter.
